OKLAHOMA CITY – Erin Slettvet of Oklahoma City University has been selected as the NAIA catcher of the year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Slettvet, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., has been named the top catcher in the NAIA in 2009 as presented by Diamond Sports and the NFCA. She also captured the NJCAA catcher of the year award as a freshman.
This year, Slettvet hit .389 with 13 doubles, 17 home runs and 61 RBIs. She posted a .993 fielding percentage, picking off eight runners. Her 524 putouts ranked among the NAIA single-season leaders. She earned first-team NAIA all-American honors as well as first-team NFCA NAIA all-American.
The Stars went 53-9 and finished fourth in the NAIA Championships.
“She probably is the best at her position we've had,” OCU coach Phil McSpadden said. “Erin has as accurate and strong an arm as any we've had. She is a total package. She is a leader on and off the field.”
In her three-year OCU career, Slettvet hit .374 with 45 doubles, 38 homers and 165 RBIs. The two-time first-team all-American and all-Sooner Athletic Conference pick ranks among the NAIA career leaders in homers. Slettvet helped lead OCU to its eighth NAIA championship in 2007.
OCU has also won national titles in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
A catcher of the year is awarded annually in the NAIA, NCAA Division I, II and III, NJCAA California junior colleges, the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and high school.
