OCU's Bench named academic all-American

Ben Bench took runner-up in the recently played Oklahoma City Amateur.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Ben Bench of Oklahoma City University has been named ESPN the Magazine academic all-American on the third team of the men's at-large college-division team.

Bench, a junior golfer from Oklahoma City, has posted a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average majoring in biomedical sciences. The College Sports Information Directors of America chose the academic all-American team based on the athletes' GPAs and success in competition.

Bench was selected as an academic all-American after being named academic all-district. Honorees must have a 3.30 or better cumulative GPA then go through a process of voting by sports information directors. Bench earned an NAIA scholar-athlete award for those with a 3.50 or better GPA.

This season, Bench had a 75.53 stroke average in 23.5 rounds. Bench tied for fifth place in the U.C. Ferguson Classic at Lincoln Park Golf Course on Oct. 6-7.

Bench recently finished second by two strokes in the Oklahoma City Amateur. He shot 281 through the four rounds played on the Lake Hefner North Course, Lincoln Park West Course, Trosper Park and Earlywine Golf Course. Bench, who won the Oklahoma City Amateur before his senior year in high school, led through two rounds.
