OKLAHOMA CITY – Sarah Leonard of Oklahoma City University has been named Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer offensive player of the year announced Saturday.
Leonard and defender Brenna Skillern made first-team all-conference, while goalkeeper Brittany Tibbs, midfielder Malin Andersson and defender Josefine Holmgren were selected to the second team.
OCU finished 11-7-1 on the season, falling one game short of the NAIA championships.
“It was good to see Sarah Leonard go out on such a good note,” said OCU coach Brian Harvey. “I think she had five hat tricks which is absolutely tremendous. It was good to see a freshman on the team also, which bodes well for our future.”
Leonard, a senior from West Yorkshire, England, earned all-conference honors for the fourth year in a row. She recorded 22 goals and six assists for a team-high 50 points in 2009. Leonard finished ranked third in school history with 53 career goals. Leonard had six games where she scored two or more goals on the season, including five hat tricks. She scored three goals, including the winning goal in a 4-3 overtime victory over USAO on Nov. 7 in the first round of the SAC Tournament. Leonard had six winning goals on the year.
Skillern, a freshman from Yukon, Okla., recorded one assist. She was part of an OCU defense that had seven shutouts on the season.
Tibbs, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., had 68 saves in goal for OCU. She put together a 1.49 goals-against average.
Andersson, a junior from Huskvarna, Sweden, earned second-team all-conference honors for the second consecutive year. She scored 11 goals to go a long with a team-high seven assists. Andersson scored three goals in OCU's 3-0 victory over John Brown (Ark.) in the semifinals of the SAC Tournament on Nov. 10.
Holmgren, a junior from Huskvarna, Sweden, had two goals and five assists. She had OCU's only goal in a 3-1 loss in the championship game of the SAC tournament on Nov. 13.
