ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Oklahoma City University ended its women’s wrestling regular season with a 22-1 dual record, beating Missouri Baptist 45-3 and Lindenwood (Mo.) 45-1 on Friday.
The Stars will wrestle next in the WCWA Women’s College Wrestling Championships on Jan. 31 in Marshall, Mo.
“How’s that for a season,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We’re really proud of our women. Now we have the national tournament left to go. We have a good shot to win. We’re going after the national title, and we think we can get it.”
Against Missouri Baptist, Joey Miller got OCU rolling with a pin of Mary Shamblin in 30 seconds at 51 kilograms. Michaela Hutchison, the Stars’ nationally top-ranked wrestler at 55 kilos, scored a 7-0, 6-0 technical fall over Shamaine Danner.
Tessa Plana, Sheila McCabe and Stefenie Shaw each picked up forfeits until Desiree Memea of Missouri Baptist upended Brittany Delgado 5-2, 2-0. Delgado is the top-ranked individual at 95 kilos. Shaw, at 67, is OCU’s other top-ranked wrestler.
Against Lindenwood, Ashley Hudson, Hutchison and Plana tallied falls at 55, 59 and 63, respectively. Stephanie Waters recorded a 6-0, 6-0 technical fall over Cynthia Zamora at 44. Then Lene Wood and Miller each had decision wins.
Miller beat Priscilla Caldera 5-3, 7-3 at 51, but Caldera scored Lindenwood’s only team point. Plana lost the first period of her match, but erased that with a second-period pin in 1:36.
